Answers
1)  Q What is the PTA?
A
The WSNS Parent Teacher Association facilitates ways for parents to support the teachers, and each other, to make our children's education fruitful and fun. We encourage parents and guardians from every student's family to join and participate.
2)  Q What does the PTA do at the WSNS School?
A
We hold a family night for every grade, such as a Harvest Festival, Books for Bingo, and Dances for the older grades. Scholastic Book Fairs are organized and staffed by parents every year. We also provide some funding for every class to enjoy a field trip.
3)  Q What do the PTA officers do?
A
The PTA Officers participate in the Somerville Council of PTAs, and attend the monthly meetings. At these meetings, we network with the PTA leaders from the city's other schools, sharing information and strategizing to make the most of our role as parent leaders. As part of this effort, we also participate in the PTA Scholarship committee, which organizes an annual Dinner Dance to raise money for several scholarships awarded to outstanding graduating Somerville High School students.

In our role as part of the wider education community, our PTA unit is a member of the national PTA, a group that advocates for students and public schools and promotes parental involvement in education. For more information, see its website, www.pta.org.
4)  Q What can I do to support the PTA?
A
We encourage everyone to join the PTA. Membership dues are $6.00 per person, or $10.00 for 2 members of one household and out of this amount we pay National and State PTA dues. The remainder of the money is used for field trips, buses, events and activities for the school.

Also, you can attend all PTA meetings and Open Houses. These evenings are for every parent or guardian of students, not just people who have joined as members of the PTA. The PTA officers will announce activities and programs coming up at the school, and report on the previous events. The PTA meeting lasts for 30 minutes and is followed by parent-teacher conferences.
5)  Q What is a Parent-Teacher conference?
A
Parent-teacher conferences are private meetings that each teacher holds with parents or guardians of students. These conferences are a chance to bring questions and concerns for the teacher.
