Adventure Summer Camp, the summer enrichment camp operated by Somerville Community Schools, offers a variety of age appropriate activities to encourage campers to explore and learn in a fun and enriching environment for students entering kindergarten to grade 6 (or 12 years old).
Each weekly session is based on a theme and all activities are related. Children are placed in different groups based on age enabling children to engage in developmentally appropriate activities. Every week offers three days on site where students move through a block schedule of activities. A sample from last year if provided below. Destination Imagination (Art), H.E.A.T (Cooking), S.M.A.R.T (ELA), Cultures, Hollywood (Dance and Singing), Nature, Science/High Tech and Just Do It (physical education games), and Swimming at Foss Park. Activities may alter slightly from year to year. There are three daily recreational choices at the end of each day: Arts and Crafts, Water Activities and Physical Activity.
Twice a week campers attend field trips to places like local beaches for swimming and sand play, the Boston Children's Museum and other local children's attractions. The structured schedule incorporates small group activities including outdoor play, visual and performing arts, science, cooking, nature and gardening, sports, technology, and other special interest activities based on the weekly theme. A camp show is presented at the end of each week and family is welcome to attend. Campers will attend field trips twice a week to swimming destinations and local children's attractions.
