Adult Basic Education

The SCALE ABE program seeks to help students achieve their full potential as learners. Students may wish to learn to read; improve their reading, writing, and math skills; progress toward a high school credential; or prepare for a training program or higher education.

SCALE offers four levels of ABE programming:

ABE I

focuses on beginning reading and spelling skills using the Orton-Gillingham-based Wilson Reading System as a major component of its curriculum.

ABE II

develops more advanced decoding and comprehension skills as well as vocabulary and writing. Social studies is introduced at this level.

ABE III

refines and advances the skills of the earlier levels. Many students advance from ABE III into the ADP or the GED program.

ABE Reading / Writing

focuses on improving reading and writing skills of SCALE ESOL graduates to help students move into the ADP or GED programs or make the transition into college.

Please note that placement in math classes is handled by the ASE (ADP/GED)  Department.

When do classes meet?
ABE classes meet 6 hours per week.  ABE I and Reading/Writing meeting only in the evening. ABE II and III meet morning and evening.  The ABE counselor will discuss the schedule with you during the intake process.

Who is eligible?

How much does it cost?
Classes are free of charge.

How do I get more information?
