Registering for September 2013 Kindergarten

Kindergarten registration for September 2013 begins on January 26, 2013.  If your child will be five years old by August 31, 2013 and is a Somerville resident, s/he is eligible to enroll in any of the free, all-day Kindergarten programs in the Somerville Public Schools. Follow the steps outlined below to register your child for school with the Somerville Public Schools.

Follow these easy steps to register for school.

Step 1: Which Somerville Public School is right for my child?  The first step is to explore and pick your top five school choices.  Here are some ways you can find out about our schools.

  • Take advantage of the following K-8 Open Houses to get a tour, meet the Principal or other staff, talk with other parents/guardians, and get a feel for what the school day is like at each site.

Winter 2013 Open House Schedule

All Elementary Schools, 8:30AM to 1:30PM: Wednesday, January 23; Thursday, January 24; and Friday, January 25.

Parent Information Center (PIC) Coffee Hour, 9-10AM on Elementary Schools Open House days for parents/guardians who want to meet each other before going together to visit schools.

  • Read through the Guide to the Somerville Public Schools to find out more about each school.
  • Attend a Kindergarten Registration Information Session at the Michael E. Capuano Early Childhood Center, 150 Glen Street, on Tuesday, January 8, 5-6PM or Wednesday, January 9, 9-10AM for a multilingual presentation on the registration process and for answers to more specific questions you may have about registration.
  • After you're done exploring, select your top five school choices for your child to attend in September.

The District offers tips to help parents/guardians learn about schools so they can make this decision.

Step 2: Complete and Submit the Registration Paperwork

  • Pick up a school registration packet from the PIC, or download the School Registration Overview and all required forms from our website.
  • Completely fill out the registration forms. You must provide your child's birth certificate as proof of age, medical records, and two proofs of Somerville residency. You can visit the PIC during normal business hours (Monday-Thursday from 8-4 and Friday from 10-4) or attend any of the community-based registration sessions to complete the paperwork with the help of the multilingual PIC staff.
  • If necessary complete testing to determine English skills. Program recommendation will be made according to test results. Parents can decide whether they prefer Structured English Immersion Program (SEIP) or mainstream classes.
  • Provide updated medical records as soon as they are complete. Your child will not be allowed in school in September if updated medical records are not received at the PIC. If you need further assistance, contact the PIC nurse at 617-625-6600 x6967.
  • Return the completed forms to the PIC either by mail, by dropping them off, or by completing them in person with a PIC staff member.

Step 3: Wait for School Assignment

During the week of April 15, 2013, the Parent Information Center will mail home the first batch of Kindergarten Assignment letters.  Complete Kindergarten packets/applications received by April 4th will be included in the first batch of assignments.  Registration packets received after April 4th will be processed on a weekly basis.  **If your child does not get a first choice school, you will be given the opportunity to have your child's name placed on a wait list for that school by completing a "Wait List Request Form" that is available at the Parent Information Center.
