Food Allergies and Special Requests

Somerville Food and Nutrition Services is committed to providing safe, nutritious meals for students and is happy to work closely with parents/guardians to meet the needs of students with food allergies or intolerances.

If you have a student with serious food allergies and have questions or special food requests, it is important that you contact the Food Services Director at 617-625-6600 x6087. After discussing your needs, the Director will also put you in touch with the Kitchen Manager in the school the student attends.

While communication with the Department is an important part of ensuring school meals are safe for all students, the Department regrets that food vendors sometimes substitute product brands for the actual items ordered. While substituted products are usually comparable in type and quality, the ingredients may vary. If we are aware of students' allergy issues we will do everything we can to avoid serving products with allergens to susceptible students. If you have concerns about any menu items, we encourage you to provide food from home. Monthly menus are posted on the School Department website as well as in the Somerville Journal and on City Cable channel.

Peanut and Tree Nut Allergy Policy: As of 2002, the Somerville Public Schools Food Service stopped using any foods that contain peanuts, tree nuts, or traces of these nuts in meal service to students in the Public Elementary Schools.

Milk Substitutes for Lactose Intolerant and Allergic Students: Lactaid milk, soymilk, and 100% juice are available as milk substitutes for students in need. Please call the Food Services Director to arrange this service (617-625-6600 x6087).
