About the Benjamin G. Brown School

Built in 1900 and named for Tufts faculty member Benjamin G. Brown, the Brown School is the oldest elementary school in Somerville. Families choose the Brown School for its small school atmosphere and the strong emphasis on preparing students to excel academically and personally.

Staff at the Brown School are dedicated and experienced. They are adept at using student data to inform classroom instruction. Teachers participate in professional development endeavors to develop and create engaging teaching strategies to meet the individual learning needs of their students. Teachers strive to maximize the learning potential of each student. Teachers at the Brown realize that each student has his or her own learning style.

The Brown has a number of students who participate in the free instrumental music lessons offered by the Somerville Public Schools beginning in Grade 3, and student participation in the school chorus and recorder consort is growing each year.

The Somerville Community Schools Afterschool Program is onsite at the Brown. A variety of activities and clubs are available for a fee. Contact the Brown to find out what this program offers afterschool. The Brown also often has parent led clubs. Parents share their talents and expertise with our students. The Brown is full of energy during the school day and afterschool.
