The West Somerville Neighborhood School is a K-8 facility where staff, parents and the community collaborate for the development of the whole child. We strive to extend and improve our children's learning through the use of assessments, differentiated instruction, the use of technology and interdisciplinary instruction along with enhanced experiences in the fine arts. We maintain high expectations for academic achievement and appropriate behavior with mutual respect. We seek to provide a safe, supportive, healthy, creative and equitable environment through the combined effort of the school community. All students will develop skills to become independent and self-sufficient adults who are able to contribute responsibly in a global economy.
A strong academic foundation driven by local curriculum standards teaches students to become critical thinkers and problem solvers. Interdisciplinary instruction, thematic teaching and the integration of technology into all aspects of the curriculum allow students to grasp the interconnectedness of the learning process and prepare them for future endeavors. The WSNS places a strong emphasis on differentiated instruction and inclusion in the classroom for all students. The faculty and staff at the WSNS are highly qualified, caring individuals who are committed to the importance of learning and helping children reach their full potential. Learning at WSNS continues well past the 2:30 school bell. We offer a variety of after-school programs and enrichment opportunities for students including, sports, activity clubs, enrichment activities and academic support. These programs are arranged by age groups providing for developmentally appropriate activities. Our new after school program will provide educational experiences through a partnership with the Somerville Community Schools program.
