"GET IT"
Encouraging Non-Traditional-for-Gender Career Choices
- The GET-IT program is being strengthened through additional resources including written materials, DVD's and computer software as well as regular meeting times in both group and individual settings.
- The district has focused on and is continuing plans for staff professional developments targeting vocational and core academic teachers as well as guidance and adjustment counselors. Staff has attended a non-traditional-for-gender career conference at Bunker Hill Community College to learn strategies to enhance enrollment and retention of non-traditional students.
- The district, with assistance from the vocational advisory committee, is developing a community mentoring program which will identify and access non-traditional-for-gender employees, employers, and organizations.
- Student field trips for exposure to non-traditional-for-gender careers are being pursued.
- Visits to other CTE schools are planned.
- The district is planning to implement a "Buddy System" for 9th grade students using student mentors from the upper grades.
- The district is developing a plan to incorporate non-traditional-for- gender career topics, heroes, and accomplishments in the Core Academic Curriculum to provide exposure for all SHS students.
- A community awareness booth will be displayed at the yearly Vocational Fair.
