Unidos: Bilingual/Bicultural Immersion

ESCS is home to the Unidos program (Grade K-8), an innovative two-way English/Spanish language and cultural immersion program that teaches native speakers of English and Spanish in both languages. Unidos students are taught and develop oral and written proficiency in both languages, along with an appreciation of their own culture and the culture of others.

The UNIDOS staff utilizes a variety of research-based methodologies in providing instruction to promote high academic achievement and bilingual fluency. Students are taught 50% of the time in their native language, and 50% of the time in their second language. Students receive initial intensive native language literacy instruction, and are separated initially for second language skill development. Students also learn the second language through the content areas of mathematics, social studies and science. Enrollment in Unidos is limited and a lottery may be hosted annually to assign new students to available slots.
