Academic success and meaningful enrichment are the goals of the elementary after-school services offered in the Somerville Public Schools. Every elementary school offers a diverse mix of learning and enrichment activities for youth in grades PK-2, 3-5 and 6-8. that complement the school day and provides students with the opportunity to expand their knowledge, skills and attitudes through high quality, developmentally appropriate enrichment activities. In addition, students benefit from daily academic support including homework assistance and targeted tutoring services if needed. Students will be allowed the opportunity to strengthen their English, organizational abilities, and teamwork skills.

Afterschool at the Capuano Early Childhood Center

Our program seeks to be a continuation of the school day continuing to develop important early education skills. We provide a safe and nurturing environment for all students. Our Lead Teachers all hold Bachelor's Degrees or beyond in education or a related academic field with many years of experience. The milieu encourages children to develop academically, socially, and emotionally. Curriculum is thematic and based on Massachusetts Pre-school and Kindergarten Standards and Benchmarks for learning. Learning is embedded in curriculum, spontaneous play, structured centers, and of course by each other. After school enrichment clubs are also incorporated into the schedule with age appropriate activities. Classrooms are set up to be thought provoking and stimulating. There are currently two mixed pre-school/kindergarten classrooms and one kindergarten only classroom.

Classrooms are designed to be bright, inviting, and full of developmentally appropriate materials. Centers and activities include dramatic play, manipulative learning, painting, arts and crafts, computers, obstacle course and physical activities, reading/circle time, and an introduction to science, social studies, health and math topics.

The pre-school option begins at 1:40 and kindergarten at 2:30 PM. The program ends at 5:30 PM. Students must be 4 years of age before August 31. The cost for the Pre-School Afterschool Program, which runs from 1:40 PM -5:30 PM is $130.00 per week with a 5 day option only. The Kindergarten Afterschool Program, which runs from 2:30 PM - 5:30 PM is  per week with a 5 day option only. Learn more about fees and scholarships on our website. These fees will increase slightly for the 2012-2013 school year.  Please see the flyer for more information.
