Afterschool Staff
After-school programs in the Somerville Public Schools are staffed by a core team made up of a Site Coordinator, Lead Teacher and Assistant Teachers. School day teachers and fully screened contractors provide specialized services like academic tutoring or martial arts clubs. The qualifications of our staff exceed those of required by the Department of Early Education and Care (EEC).

Most core staff either holds or is working towards a Master's or Bachelor's degree in a field like child development or education. All staff participate in at least 25 hours of professional development each year in topics such as inclusion for students with disabilities, facilitating aspirations in the after-school environment, managing challenging behaviors, project-based learning curriculum development, and motivating middle school students. Consistent with District standards and EEC policies, after-school staff are also required to be certified in First Aid and CPR, and receive training in student medication management.

After-school staff perform regular fire drills, and know the evacuation plan for their school in the unlikely event of an emergency. Many after-school staff are bi- or multi-lingual and may be able to provide interpretation support when families and students need help.
Community Partners in Afterschool

The District also works with afterschool partners. These partners bring special expertise to the afterschool learning environment in some schools. Partners may include:

    • Afterschool gardening and ecology clubs provided by Groundwork Somerville.
    • Legos and Robotics provided by the Tufts School of Engineering.
    • Science Activity clubs provided by E-Inc.
