Somerville Public Schools has Summer School programs for both elementary and high school students.

Summer School is recommended to students who may be in danger of failing their school grade, allowing them to develop skills to make passing the grade possible.

Summer School classes are taught by highly qualified teachers who design and deliver individualized, standards-linked content, in a positive and encouraging setting. Every Summer School teacher shares the same goal: esuring all enrolled students meet their grade level standards by the end of Summer School.

Elementary Summer School

Location:Arthur D. Healey School (5 Meacham Street)

Monday-Thursday: July 2nd - August 9th, 2012

Classes offered: English Language Arts and Math for Grades 1-7

All classes meet daily (M-Th) from 8:00-10:00am or 10:10-12:00pm

FREE breakfast for all students, regardless of ability to pay, will be available in the school cafeteria beginning at 7:30am.

FREE lunch for all students, regardless of ability to pay, will be available after 12:00pm

Monday-Friday: July 2nd - August 3rd

Classes offered: English Language Arts, Math and Science for Grades 8-12

Who "needs" Summer School?

Somerville students who are assessed as not meeting grade level standards for ELA, Math or Science by their teachers, principals or other members of the staff should be recommended for Summer School.

Students who are not meeting grade level standards because they are also learning English will be encouraged to enroll in the Summer Program for English Language Learners (SPELL). Contact Dr. Sarah Davila for more information about SPELL at: 617-625-6600 x6097 or sdavila@k12.somerville.ma.us.

How do I make a Summer School recommendation?

The District accepts Summer School recommendations from teachers. Teachers may download the enrollment forms that correspond to the CURRENT grade the student is in. Complete the form and return it to your Principal no later than the end of the workday on Monday, June 4th.

Required information will include:

• Student name, grade, current school and name(s) of current teacher(s).
• Grade level standard(s) NOT being met by the student - this will be shared with the student's Summer School teacher(s) so s/he can target instruction on those areas needing a boost.
• Emergency contact information. Once the required Summer School recommendation form is completed and received by the Summer School Director, no additional information is expected to be needed from staff or parents.

Registration:

Students in grades 1-7 will be enrolled by their teacher or principal between May 14th and June 4th.

High School students must register for Summer School on June 27th or 28th from 12:00pm-3:00pm at Somerville High (81 Highland Ave).

Course Fees:

High School students must pay $125 per course for residents of Somerville and $150 per course for non-residents of Somerville.
