Summer Music Camps Somerville String Camp 2013 Somerville String Camp will be held July 15 - 26, 2013, at the John F. Kennedy School in Porter Square (5 Cherry St.), Somerville, MA. Hours of camp are Monday to Friday 9:00am – 12:10pm.
String camp is open to violin, viola, cello and bass players of all ages. Students who have played for a year or more will be placed in an orchestra based on their playing level. String camp is also open to beginners aged 7 and older.
String Camp offers daily intensive orchestra rehearsals, chamber music coaching, chorus, music theory, technique and improvisation classes to students from Somerville and surrounding communities in a fun and enjoyable setting. Established in 1993 by Ms Rita Ranucci, Somerville String Camp is dedicated to offering a unique summer music experience with specialized teachers and conductors from the Somerville, Medford, Lexington and Newton Public Schools, the New England Conservatory, the Longy School of Music and El Sistema Somerville. The String Camp curriculum was originally based on successful summer programs in New Jersey and The Netherlands. Somerville String Camp is the proud recipient of a gold star from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Joanne Sadler, Director of String Camp 2013, is a teacher in the Somerville Public Schools String Program. A violinist, Joanne has played in orchestras in the US, the UK, Europe and Australia. She currently lives in Somerville with her husband and two young children.
Camp will begin on Monday July 15. It will conclude on Friday July 26 with a short concert open to the public at 11:15am. Please arrive early on Monday July 15 to pick up your class schedule, etc. The front desk will be open beginning at 8:00am. Parents are also invited to meet the teachers and teaching assistants before the first class.
