Overview of our House System

SHS students are divided into four Houses designed to meet students’ academic and social needs through a comprehensive, collaborative team approach. In September we meet with small groups of freshmen, then all students by grade. Our guidance staff is dedicated to practicing preventative, pro-active counseling which includes discussing academic and adolescent issues, pre-college planning, career exploration and post high school planning. Communication is key; we encourage family members to call their student's house team with questions.

The Ninth Grade Experience (NGE) and NEST Program

We provide extra support for students as they settle into their first year at Somerville High School. The ninth grade teachers function as a team and meet two times per week to determine strategies aimed at maximizing the potential of the students they teach. Ninth teachers strive to support and maintain parental and support service contact. To facilitate communication, ninth grade teachers meet regularly with Housemasters, guidance counselors, adjustment counselors, and special education liasons. The biweekly meeting times are also used to discuss student progress, to develop curriculum materials, and to meet with or phone parents and guardians. The NEST Program functions similarly to the NGE program, but contains an ELL component. Read the NGE Newsletter to learn more about this great program!
