Frequently Asked Questions about the Capuano
What time does school start?
If your child is in Kindergarten, you are welcome to come to school as early as 7:30 AM to enjoy a healthy breakfast in the cafeteria. All students must be in the cafeteria by 8:11. At this time they will be escorted to their classrooms by their teacher and other staff. If your child is in Pre-Kindergarten please plan to arrive NO EARLIER than 8:15 to enjoy a healthy breakfast in the cafeteria. All students must by in the cafeteria by 8:45. At this time they will be escorted to their classrooms by their teacher and other staff.
What do I do once I've arrived at the building?
Every teacher/classroom will have a separate table in the cafeteria on Monday morning. It will be clearly marked. Please bring your child to her/his teacher's table. If you arrive on time for breakfast you are welcome to sit and enjoy breakfast with your child his/her teacher and any classmates and other families. When students are escorted to their classroom you are welcome to go with them to see the room, make sure your child is settled and learn a little bit more about how we start our day at the Capuano Center.
Pre-Kindergarten lets out at 11:00 a.m. the first week of school. Can I just stay with my child in her/his classrom until then?
Unfortunately we don't have room in the classrooms for all parents/guardians to stay with their child. However, if you want to stay in the building until 11:00 that is fine. After you are satisfied that your child is settled in his/her classroom, please return to the cafeteria. Here you can fill out start of the year paperwork and talk with Principal Cheryl Piccirelli.
What if I'm late dropping off my child for the start of school?
Arriving at school on time is very important. If for some reason you are late, please enter through the main school entrance and head to the main office to sign your child in to the building.
What do I need to bring on the first day?
Pre-Kindergarten students do not need to bring anything on the first day. Healthy snacks will be provided by the Capuano Center this week. No school supplies are needed.
Kindergarten students are asked to bring peanut-free snacks on the first day. No school supplies are needed.
When will children be dismissed?
During the first week of school, all Pre-Kindergarten children will be dismissed at 11:00 AM. Beginning the second week of school, Pre-kindergarten dismissal is at 1:45 PM. All Kindergarten children are dismissed at 2:30 PM.
What is the dismissal procedure?
All parents/guardians must wait for the teacher to say their child's name and then come forward to get their child. Please do not call your child's name or take them out of line.
What if I have a babysitter or other relative who will regularly pick up my child?
On the first day of school we will ask you to fill out a list of people who are authorized to pick up your child from school. If one of these people comes instead of you we may ask for identification to safely verify your child can leave with this person. People cannot be added to this list by telephone, nor can anyone NOT on the approved list pick up your child from school. We hope you understand this is a system for protecting your child's safety.
What if I'm late picking up my child?
Please call us to let us know you will be more than 10 minutes late, 617-629-5480. Teachers and other staff will generally wait outside with students for 5 or 10 minutes. If all students haven't been picked up by then, they will be brought back inside the building.
Is the Capuano Center a peanut-free school?
You will learn on the first day of school if your child has been assigned to a peanut-free classroom. If your child is in a peanut-free classroom we ask that you not bring any snacks with peanuts in them. You will be given information on healthy, peanut-free snack options. There are no peanuts or groundnuts used in any meals - breakfast, lunch or snacks - prepared by Somerville's award-winning Food Service Department.
I have important medical information I need to get to the nurse. When can I do this?
On the first day of school our school nurse will be available to talk with you, learn about your child's needs, and accept any medication forms and medications.
Can I give my child's physical forms to the School Nurse?
No! These forms need to be delivered immediately to the Parent Information Center (42 Prescott Street). If the Somerville Public Schools does not have this information on file your child cannot start school.
