Academics

Built in 1900, the Brown School is the oldest elementary school in Somerville. The Brown offers a small school, family atmosphere with a strong emphasis on preparing students to excel academically and personally, providing them with the tools to become productive and positive members of society.

Some of the Learning Opportunities Offered at the Brown School

Extensive student participation inthe string, band, and chorus programs for students in grades 3-5

K-5 Features numerous teacher-led clubs, such as Roots and Shoots (service club), Book Club and Chorus. 

K-5 Playworks recess program that promotes "safe, fun and healthy play at school every day"

Nature's Classroom learning experience for 5th grade students 

K-5 Social-Emotional curriculum called Second Step for all students

K-5 developmentally appropriate afterschool programming for all students. Learning at the Brown continues well past the afternoon bell with a variety of afterschool programs and enrichment opportunities for students, including academic support, creative arts, and sports.

School report card

The Brown School regularly reports demographic and student progress data to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). This data is used to develop the annual No Child Left Behind progress report card for the Brown School. The most current Report Card for the Brown School can be found online.
