Enrollment at Somerville Public Schools
Welcome to Somerville Public Schools! Whether your child is starting school for the first time, moving into a new grade, or transferring from another school, the Enrollment Office is here to help make the process as clear and welcoming as possible.
Here you’ll find the key steps and documents you’ll need, including information about grade-level enrollment, residency and health requirements, school options, and important registration deadlines. The checklist is designed to help families understand what to do, what to prepare, and where to find additional information along the way.

Enrollment Process
The school registration process can take 7–10 days if you are enrolling to start during the current school year. If enrolling for next school year, school assignment dates will be announced on the SPS website.

Collect Required Documents and Register Online or In Person
Register online or in person with your required documents. If you would like help, please request an appointment by email or by calling 617-629-5670. Our staff speak English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Haitian Creole. We also have a language line to provide support in any language.

Document Review
Your documents are reviewed by the Enrollment Office including a recent completed physical examination with immunization records (an updated one within one year of school entry will be required).

English Language Assessment
If your child speaks or understands a language in addition to English, we must collect information about their English Language Learner history from their previous school. If this is the first time your child will be attending school in the United States, we will schedule a language assessment to determine the best program for them.

Students with IEPs
If your child has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), the Enrollment Office will ask you to sign two release forms and then will connect with the Special Education Department to determine the best program for your child.

School Assignment
Once your child has been medically cleared and all documents have been received, you will be assigned a school based on Somerville School Committee policy which prioritizes program need, sibling preference, and proximity (school to which your address is connected).

Monday: 8:00am – 4:00pm
Tuesday: 8:00 – 9:00am and 10:30am – 4:00pm
Wednesday: 8:00am – 4:00pm
Thursday: 8:00am – 4:00pm
Friday: 8:00am – 12:00pm and 1:00 – 4:00pm
