SPS Programs
Somerville Public Schools works with community partners to offer afterschool programs for qualifying students in Pre-K to Grade 8. Programs provide a variety of hands-on enrichment activities that extend student learning, allowing students the opportunity to develop skills or explore new interests.
Most programs are facilitated by Somerville Public Schools, with additional opportunities offered by external vendors. Educators may also recommend students for referral-only programs.
Provider Programs
Provider Programs offered during after-school hours are available to SPS students and are delivered by external community partners at SPS schools and facilities (unless noted). They are often aligned with the school-day curriculum, providing meaningful enrichment and extended learning opportunities beyond the classroom.
Apollo After School is a vendor-administered program run at the Argenziano School (K-6) and Kennedy School (PK-6). It uses research-based curriculum and project-based learning to help students develop their academic skills while also nurturing positive relationships with friends, families, and community. This full time program is fee-based with financial aid for qualifying students.
El Sistema Somerville offers innovative ensemble-based music instruction to SPS elementary and middle grades students, Grades 3–8. Housed at East Somerville Community School, this full time, fee-based program offers intensive study on strings, winds, and brass instruments through orchestral rehearsals, sectionals, musicianship and technique classes, chamber music, and private lessons. This is an internal, SPS program. This full time program is fee-based with financial aid for qualifying students.
The Environmental Leadership Program helps students enjoy time outdoors, learn about the environment, play games and make nature art while disconnecting from their phones and connecting with other students. Field trips are included. Meets Wednesdays at Healey School and Fridays at East Somerville Community School. Designed for students in Grades 6 – 8 who meet income qualifications.
Future Lab by Knovva Academy is a dynamic academic program, meeting three days per week at East Somerville Community School and West Somerville Neighborhood School, to provide middle grades students with engaging, hands-on learning experiences. The program is intentionally aligned with SPS curriculum and developed in collaboration with Somerville High School’s Dept. of College and Career Readiness to support academic success, leadership development, and future readiness.
occer Without Borders uses soccer as a vehicle for belonging, leadership, and opportunity. We partner with newcomer and immigrant youth to build community, support academic success, and foster personal growth—on and off the field. Meets Monday thru Thursday only, located at Foss Park. Designed for newcomer and immigrant students, with priority given to Winter Hill students. Remaining spaces are open to registered students districtwide.
Referral Programs
Educators or school administrators refer students to various after school programs that are beneficial to student growth and enrichment. These programs, operated externally by community partners, can be reflective of school curriculum or designed to develop social emotional skills. SPS currently offers four referral programs that are free of charge (based on referral).
Becoming A Man (BAM) is a counseling program that guides young men in Grades 7-12 to learn, internalize and practice social cognitive skills, make responsible decisions for their future, and become positive members of their school and community. BAM integrates clinical theory and practice, men’s rites of passage work, and a dynamic approach to youth engagement.
Working on Womanhood (WOW) is a group counseling program designed to improve the social-emotional competencies of young women in grades 6-12 who have been exposed to traumatic stressors in high risk and under-resourced communities. WOW consists of interactive group counseling sessions that meet on-site during the school day once per week.
Enroot empowers immigrant high school students to dissolve barriers and explore their goals to build skills necessary to thrive in college, career, and in their communities. Highlights include mentorship, academic readiness, and personal development.
Program Schedule
Programs enroll in three seasonal sessions during the school year (unless noted). Students are dismissed between 5:15 and 5:30 p.m. each day. On early-release Wednesdays, programming begins immediately following the end of classes.

Families are encouraged to explore the Fall Catalog with their children to discover the activities and interests that are the best fit for them.
A new catalog will be released this winter with exciting options for the next club session.
