Somerville School Committee
The School Committee is the elected governing body for Somerville Public Schools. It works with the Superintendent to set districtwide policies and educational priorities, review and recommend the school budget to the Mayor, and oversee the district’s finances.
School Committee Members
The Committee includes seven members elected by ward every two years in odd-numbered years. The Mayor and City Council President also serve as ex-officio members with full voting rights.
School Committee Meetings
The Somerville School Committee typically meets on the first and third Monday of each month during the school year (September through June), unless otherwise posted. Meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers on the second floor of Somerville City Hall, 93 Highland Avenue. Meetings are open to the public, except during Executive Session, and are broadcast live on Somerville Cable Channel 16.
Subcommittees
Much of the detailed work of the Somerville School Committee takes place through its subcommittees, which focus on specific work that includes curriculum, rules, finance, facilities, and more. Additionally, the Long-Range Planning Committee serves as a Standing Committee of the Whole. These meetings are held either in-person or virtually, and are open to the public.
