History Social Studies
The SHS Social Studies Department prepares students to become informed, engaged citizens who can thoughtfully participate in a democratic society and an increasingly interconnected world. Through the study of history, students explore essential questions about social change, global connections, civic responsibility, and the role of individuals in shaping society. Courses emphasize critical reading, writing, speaking, and analytical skills through research, essays, debates, and the study of primary and secondary sources. As a culminating experience, all students complete a thematic Capstone research project in Grade 11.
Requirements
Students are required to successfully complete World History and U.S. History. In Grade 11, students fulfill an additional 5-credit Social Studies requirement by choosing either two semester-long electives (one from each semester) or a year-long AP or college-level course.
