Teacher Mentor Program
New teachers in Somerville Public Schools are paired with experienced mentors who help them navigate our schools, curriculum, instructional resources, and community. The program provides support, guidance, and feedback to help new teachers become confident, effective members of the school community. Mentors are assigned to novice teachers, teachers changing grade levels, teachers moving to a new school, and teachers new to SPS, even if they have teaching experience elsewhere. Mentors build trusting, professional relationships; help new teachers understand school culture, practices, and procedures; share strategies and feedback; model effective practice; and encourage independence, reflection, and professional growth. New teachers are expected to engage in learning, seek feedback and support, observe experienced colleagues, reflect on their practice, and take an active role in their professional growth.
