Somerville Public Schools provides a diverse and comprehensive visual arts program that supports students in integrating the arts into their academic learning and social-emotional development. Research shows that participation in the visual arts builds essential skills, including visual awareness, creative expression, and overall intellectual growth.

Led by a team of certified art educators, the K–12 program is aligned with state standards and offers a balanced, sequential curriculum. Students engage in creative problem-solving, self-expression, and exploration through a wide range of media and global perspectives. Students are assessed based on their individual growth and development, with skills building over time to support artistic creation, reflection, and future opportunities in the visual arts. 

The City of Somerville boasts the highest number of artists per capita outside of New York City, creating opportunities for strong partnerships with local artists, organizations, and higher education institutions that enrich student learning through residencies, demonstrations, and performances supported in part by the Somerville Arts Council.
