World Languages
The World Language Program develops students’ communication skills through reading, writing, listening, and speaking while building cultural understanding and appreciation. Instruction in the sequential levels stresses the development of language proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking as well as acquiring an understanding and appreciation of other cultures. The curriculum is based upon the Massachusetts Foreign Language Curriculum Frameworks and the American Council on Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) national standards.
Languages Offered
Languages offered at SHS are Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Italian.
Language students from Somerville High School have also taken group trips to Spain, Portugal, Cuba, Costa Rica and Somerville’s sister city, Gaeta, Italy.

Course offerings may include:
World Language 1
Offered in Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Italian (Honors or Standard), this course introduces foundational vocabulary, communication skills, and cultural knowledge through an active, speaking-focused approach.
World Language 2
Offered in Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Italian (Honors or Standard), this course expands students’ vocabulary, grammar knowledge, reading comprehension, writing skills, and oral proficiency.
World Language 3
Offered in Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Italian (Honors or Standard), this course builds on previous language skills through expanded vocabulary, independent conversation, interactive activities, and exploration of cultural topics.
World Language 4
Offered in French, Portuguese, and Italian (Honors), this advanced course provides opportunities for students to strengthen fluency through independent work, presentations, conversations, and the study of cultural and literary themes.
