The Winter Hill Community Innovation School (WHCIS) is Somerville’s only Innovation School, offering a unique, student-centered model that emphasizes limited self-governance and innovative approaches to meeting diverse learner needs. Serving Pre-K to Grade 8 students—including mainstream classes, English Language Learners in Grades 6–8, and students with special education needs across Grades K to 8—WHCIS is committed to inclusive, adaptive education. Recognized in 2017 with The Pozen Prize for Innovative Schools from The Boston Foundation, the school has been nationally noted for its forward-thinking practices. Following the closure of its Sycamore Street building in 2023, WHCIS programs have been temporarily relocated, with all grades expected to be unified at the Edgerly Education Center while a new school building is developed in partnership with the Massachusetts School Building Authority.
