Subcommittees

Much of the Somerville School Committee’s detailed work in overseeing Somerville Public Schools takes place through its subcommittees. The School Committee currently has the following subcommittees:

Education Programs and Instruction

The Educational Programs and Instruction Subcommittee is essentially the School Committee’s main forum for going deeper into teaching, learning, student programs, and academic outcomes before issues come to the full School Committee. Current members include: Laura Pitone (Chair), Michele Lippens (Vice Chair), Liz Eldridge.

Finance and Facilities

Finance and Facilities is the School Committee’s primary forum for the district’s financial stewardship, budget development, facilities, and operational resources. Current members include Andre Green (Chair), Leiran Biton (Vice Chair), Emma Stellman.

Rules Management

The Rules Management Subcommittee is focused on the rules, policies, and governance framework that guide how Somerville Public Schools operates. Current members include Leiran Biton (Chair), Emma Stellman (Vice Chair), Michele Lippens.

School Buildings Facilities and Maintenance Committee

The School Buildings, Facilities and Maintenance Committee is the School Committee’s focused forum for the physical condition, maintenance, safety, and long-term planning of SPS school buildings and grounds. Current members include Leiran Biton (Chair), Laura Pitone (Vice Chair), Liz Eldridge.

Long-Range Planning Subcommittee

The Long-Range Planning Subcommittee is the School Committee’s space for stepping back from individual programs, budgets, or facilities issues to identify what Somerville Public Schools will look like several years from now, and what decisions do we need to make today to get there? Current members include Laura Pitone (Chair), Liz Eldridge (Vice Chair).

In addition, the Committee for Long Range Planning is a Standing Committee of the Whole. It is chaired by the Chair of the School Committee.

Subcommittee Meetings

Subcommittee Meetings and Subcommittee Meetings of the Whole are held virtually via Zoom. Members of the public are welcome to attend these meetings.
