World Languages

Somerville Public Schools values global understanding and multilingualism, building its World Language program on the cultural and linguistic diversity of its community. Learning another language supports academic success, cognitive growth, and meaningful cross-cultural connections. The program ensures equitable access for all students, highlights a wide range of cultural perspectives—including those less commonly taught—and connects learning to students’ own experiences and communities.

Instruction is proficiency-based and student-centered, helping learners build on what they already know to communicate effectively. In alignment with ACTFL guidelines, students progress through the levels of Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, and Superior.

Beginning in Grade 7, students benefit from expanded language instruction in the middle grades, while K–8 students may also participate in the UNIDOS Spanish/English Immersion program. At the high school level, students can study French, Italian, Portuguese, or Spanish through a curriculum aligned with state and national standards, with Portuguese also offered at Full Circle High School.
