Library and Media
The Library/Media Department is committed to providing both space and resources for all Somerville students to become future ready members of the community. We strive for all of our students to grow to embody a lifelong love of reading, innovative thinking, competent research skills, and collaborative work relationships. We help all students develop the skills to become informed library users, critical thinkers, effective and ethical users and producers of ideas, information, and technology. Our libraries provide exposure to books and media representing diverse viewpoints and cultures.
Library Citizenship
Students grow into confident library users who know how to find what they need and care for our shared tools and books. They learn to be respectful community members who value the library as a place for everyone to learn and work together.
Research
Students learn to turn their curiosity into discovery by asking questions and finding reliable answers. They build the foundation for lifelong learning by practicing how to gather, organize, and share information responsibly.
Literature
Students explore a world of stories to discover new ideas and develop a genuine love for reading. By meeting diverse characters and authors, they learn to see the world through many different eyes.
Digital Literacy and Computer Science Integration
K-8 Digital Literacy and Computer Science curriculum and instruction is integrated into the Library Media curriculum. Students learn to use technology as a tool for creating, problem-solving, and communicating. They develop the skills to stay safe and make smart choices in our digital world.
The Arthur D. Healey School offers DLCS K-8 as one of its 5 specials, in addition to Library. The East Somerville Community School and Albert F. Argenziano School offer DLCS to students in grade 5-8 in place of Library. The West Somerville Neighborhood School and John. K Kennedy School directly integrate DLCS curriculum K-8 into Library class. Benjamin G. Brown school integrates DLCS into library content.
