Kindergarten – 8th Grade Curriculum Overview

Math

The math curriculum focuses on building conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and real-world application. Illustrative Mathematics (IM) is used in Grades K–8, providing a consistent and connected learning experience from Kindergarten through Grade 8. English Language Arts (ELA)

A strong foundation in early literacy is essential for learning to read. Reading instruction  focuses on the five key components of reading identified by the National Reading Panel: phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. These elements are supported by current research on literacy development and dyslexia and help students develop the skills needed to read and understand written language.

In Pre-K, SEE Every Child curriculum is used.
Grades K-3 students use FUNdations as their foundational skills curriculum. 
Grades K-4 students use Wit and Wisdom as their knowledge building curriculum. 
Grades 5-8 students use the Fishtank ELA curriculum

In the knowledge building curricula, students develop skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking, analyzing texts, expressing ideas clearly, and considering multiple perspectives. Both Wit and Wisdom and Fishtank are  standards-based, rigorous, and designed to promote critical thinking and discussion.

Science, Technology, and Engineering

Strong science education nurtures curiosity and builds critical thinking and problem-solving skills for college and career readiness. Students engage in hands-on learning such as conducting experiments, building models, and exploring real-world topics like energy conservation.

Since 2016, K–5 science units have been developed in partnership with Boston University and are centered on anchoring phenomena that help students make sense of scientific concepts. In Grades 6–8, the STEMscopes curriculum has been used since 2019. The district is also piloting Amplify and OpenSciEd for consideration.

Additionally, beginning in 2026-27, all students in Grades K-8 engage in Digital Literacy and Computer Science (DLCS) curriculum either within the Library classroom or within a stand-alone DLCS classroom. Each grade-level explores concepts of digital literacy, computer science, and physical computing. In addition to our educator-created curriculum, our DLCS curriculum incorporates resources from Common Sense Media, Lego Education, CODE.org, Scratch, and Experience CS.

Social Studies

Social studies supports the development of informed, engaged citizens in local, national, and global communities. The curriculum fosters compassion, empathy, curiosity, perspective-taking, and respect for human differences, while building skills to investigate topics and critically analyze information.

Educator-developed, standards-based curriculum is currently in use in Grades 1-4, while Investigating History social studies curriculum is used in Grades 5-7.  Eighth grade uses a civics curriculum aligned to standards and state requirements.
