Dr. Rubén Carmona
Dr. Rubén Carmona is a career educator and transformative educational leader with more than two decades of experience advancing student achievement, educational equity, and systemic improvement in urban public schools. Since July 2023, he has served as Superintendent of Somerville Public Schools, where he leads the district’s strategic vision to strengthen academic excellence, expand opportunities for all learners, and foster thriving school communities.
Dr. Carmona brings both professional expertise and lived experience to his work. His leadership is rooted in a deep commitment to multilingual education, academic equity, and ensuring every student has access to rigorous, engaging learning experiences that prepare them for future success.
Before joining Somerville, Dr. Carmona held a variety of instructional and leadership roles across Massachusetts. He served as Executive Director of Family, Community, and Employee Engagement for Salem Public Schools, where he strengthened partnerships between schools, families, and the broader community. His previous experience also includes serving as a principal in Salem and Lowell Public Schools, leading school improvement initiatives focused on instructional excellence and curriculum development, and as a Regional Academic Director for Boston Public Schools, where he supported academic growth and school performance across multiple campuses.
Dr. Carmona earned his Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership, with a focus on driving systemic change in urban school districts. Throughout his career, he has remained dedicated to building inclusive learning environments where every student is empowered to succeed.
As superintendent, Dr. Carmona has championed efforts to deepen learning, increase academic rigor, strengthen social-emotional supports, and implement high-quality mathematics and literacy curricula across the district. He also emphasizes data-informed decision-making through strategic performance dashboards that help guide continuous improvement and ensure accountability to students, families, staff, and the community.
