About SPS

Somerville’s rich history of public education dates back to 1852, with the opening of the Somerville Free High School. Over the decades, the city’s schools expanded and evolved—from landmark buildings on Central Hill to vocational and junior high programs—reflecting a longstanding commitment to opportunity and innovation. Its notable alumni include former Somerville mayors Mike Capuano and Joseph Curtatone, Baseball Hall of Famer Pie Traynor, musician Bobby “Boris” Pickett, and more recently, popular social media personalities the Sturniolo brothers. Today, Somerville High School carries that legacy forward, blending cherished historic spaces with modern facilities designed for the future.

Somerville Public Schools serves a diverse and dynamic population of more than 5,000 students in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12. Each of our schools has its own character and culture, while all schools collectively benefit from a uniform district-wide curriculum and rich and diverse student population.
