Frequently Asked Questions: SPS Community Schools
While every effort is made to offer placements to students on the waitlist as soon as possible, families are strongly encouraged to explore alternative afterschool care options. Students may remain on the waitlist; however, placement is not guaranteed, and the timing of any opening is uncertain.
The length of time a student remains on the waitlist varies by school site and depends on factors such as demand, staffing, and student mobility. Programs aim to move students off waitlists as quickly as possible when space becomes available.
The district continues to expand afterschool programming where possible. Since 2016, enrollment has grown significantly, reflecting an ongoing effort to increase access and reduce waitlists.
Scheduling options vary by site. Pre-Kindergarten students and kindergarten students at the Capuano site must enroll for five days per week. Students in Grades K–5 may have options to attend three, four, or five days per week, depending on the program location.
Families who do not receive an afterschool placement are encouraged to explore other high-quality programs offered by community organizations. Resources are available through the City of Somerville’s Somerville Hub Connect.
Afterschool programming takes place at the school a student attends and is offered at all PK–8 schools.
Community Schools afterschool programs are available at all PK–8 schools for students in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 5.
