Athletic Programs

Offerings include football, soccer, basketball, ice hockey, volleyball, baseball, softball, lacrosse, tennis, golf, swimming, cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, competitive cheerleading, Unified Basketball, and Track & Field. Students can also participate in club sports such as boys and girls ultimate frisbee and boys and girls crew. Through these programs, Somerville High School athletes build skills, develop leadership, and represent their school with pride both on and off the field.

All SHS coaches are trained by the Positive Coaching Alliance.

Somerville High School Athletic Alumni

Somerville High School has a proud athletic tradition, with many Highlanders going on to achieve success at the collegiate, professional, and Olympic levels. Notable alumni include Pie Traynor, a Major League Baseball Hall of Famer recognized as one of the greatest third basemen in baseball history; Gosder Cherilus, a former NFL offensive tackle; Hal Connolly, an Olympic gold medalist in the hammer throw at the 1956 Summer Olympics; Phil Reavis, an Olympian and Somerville track standout whose legacy is honored through the naming of the school’s athletic field; Shanty Hogan, a Major League Baseball player; and Maurice Roberts, a professional hockey player. These athletes represent the long-standing tradition of excellence, dedication, and Highlander pride that continues to define Somerville High School Athletics.

Students are expected to follow the rules in the 2025-2026 SPS Student-Athlete Handbook and MIAA Handbook.
