At NWFC, annual fundraiser brings holiday cheer to Somerville
The holiday spirit is in full bloom at Somerville’s Next Wave Middle School and Full Circle High School (NWFC) as students keep a beloved tradition alive with their annual wreath sale. The longtime seasonal fundraiser brings students together with the community to not only spread seasonal cheer, but also help fund enriching experiences and memorable opportunities for students.
The annual wreath sale continues to draw an enthusiastic response from across Somerville, with many community members eager to show their appreciation for NWFC. Located within the high school, with its own separate entrance, NWFC provides a close-knit, therapeutic learning environment centered on project-based learning and individualized supports that help students thrive.
Interim Principal Jack Haverty is proud of the students’ effort, adding that “we try to keep these wreaths at the same pricing as other wreaths. But these are nice, thick wreaths shipped to us from Nova Scotia, Canada. Even the bows are high-quality.”
The wreath sale is a holiday tradition dating back several decades. The original fundraiser was a tree lot, but when the logistics of setting up a secure tree lot and managing foot traffic at the new high school became impossible, staff cleverly pivoted to offering high quality holiday wreaths. Planning begins in late September, with the hardworking NWFC staff coordinating the many details involved in making the annual fundraiser a success.
Students are at the heart of the wreath sale, taking an active role in preparing each decoration by adding festive red bows, labeling orders, and making deliveries. This year, students will deliver wreaths to their former schools, offering a chance to reconnect with familiar faces and strengthen ties with the communities where their educational journeys began. Along the way, they gain valuable hands-on experience with fundraising while building relationships and a stronger connection to the Somerville community.
For some, picking up a wreath also offers a first look inside the new Somerville High School building. Staff welcome the opportunity to introduce visitors to NWFC, often offering tours and sharing more about the school and its students.
Proceeds from the Wreath Sale directly benefit students. Funds support incentive-based activities, including field trips. This fall, students visited Connors Farm to pick apples, climbed Mount Monadnock, and are planning a roller-skating trip. The fundraiser also supports NWFC’s soccer and basketball teams. Thanks to community support, the school will be able to field both junior varsity and varsity basketball teams this year. The soccer team also welcomed four other schools for competition and received new uniforms. These opportunities are all made possible, in part, by the annual wreath sale.
