Fall is an exciting time for Highlander Athletics! Students can join a variety of teams, build new friendships, and represent Somerville High School with pride. Fall sports include football, coed golf, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls cross country, girls volleyball, competitive cheerleading, and Unified Basketball. Whether you are a returning athlete or trying a new sport, our fall programs provide opportunities to compete, grow, and be part of the Highlander community.

Football

Somerville High School Athletics competes in MIAA Division 3 and is a proud member of the Greater Boston League (GBL). The Highlanders compete against local league rivals including Medford, Revere, Malden, Everett, Lynn English, and Lynn Classical. The athletic schedule also features traditional and regional matchups with schools such as Cambridge Rindge & Latin, including the historic Thanksgiving Day rivalry game, as well as Belmont, Boston Latin, and Waltham. Golf

Somerville High School Golf competes in MIAA Division 2 (North Sectional) and is a proud member of the Greater Boston League (GBL). The Highlanders compete against league opponents including Everett, Lynn Classical, Lynn English, Malden, Medford, and Revere, with the varsity team regularly contending near the top of the standings. Throughout the fall season, the team competes in league matches, the GBL Championship, and has a strong tradition of advancing to MIAA postseason competition.

Somerville High School Cross Country competes in the Greater Boston League (GBL) during the regular season and participates in MIAA Division 1 postseason competition. The Highlanders race against local GBL opponents including Cambridge Rindge and Latin, Chelsea, Everett, Lynn Classical, Lynn English, Malden, Medford, and Revere. In the postseason, Somerville competes against other large high schools across Eastern Massachusetts in Division 1 state-level events.

Competitive Cheerleading

Somerville High School Competitive Cheerleading competes in MSAA Division 2 regional and state events and participates in regular-season competitions against Greater Boston League (GBL) opponents. The Highlanders compete alongside teams such as Malden, Medford, Everett, Revere, Chelsea, Lynn English, and Lynn Classical, while also facing regional competitors including Winchester, Belmont, Woburn, Wilmington, Beverly, and Danvers in postseason events. The program emphasizes teamwork, school spirit, and competitive excellence.

Unified Basketball

Somerville High School Unified Basketball is a Greater Boston League (GBL) program and is officially sanctioned by the MIAA in partnership with Special Olympics Massachusetts. The team promotes inclusion, teamwork, and school spirit by bringing together students with and without intellectual disabilities to compete in a supportive environment. The fall season includes games against GBL opponents such as Malden, Medford, Lynn Classical, Lynn Tech, and Everett, and culminates with regional postseason jamborees in November.

Winter is a great time to be a Highlander! Somerville High School offers a variety of winter sports that give students the opportunity to compete, stay active, and build connections with teammates. Winter offerings include boys and girls basketball, boys and girls ice hockey, boys and girls indoor track and field, coed swimming, and competitive cheerleading. Whether competing on the court, ice, track, or in the pool, our student-athletes represent Somerville with dedication, teamwork, and Highlander pride.

The Highlanders compete alongside local GBL rivals including Everett, Malden, Medford, and Revere, while also facing strong regional programs such as Tewksbury, Wakefield, Gloucester, Dracut, Lynn Vocational Tech, Newburyport, Marblehead, Wayland, and Swampscott in MIAA competition. The program showcases teamwork, athleticism, and Highlander spirit throughout the season.

Boys and Girls Club Ultimate Frisbee

Somerville High School Ultimate Frisbee offers competitive opportunities for both boys/open and girls teams through the Massachusetts High School Ultimate League (MAHSUL). The Boys/Open team competes in Division 1, while the Girls/Gx team competes in Division 2. During the spring season, Highlanders face strong regional programs including Arlington, Newton North, Brookline, Lincoln-Sudbury, BC High, and Xaverian, culminating in the Massachusetts High School State Championships. The program emphasizes teamwork, strategy, and sportsmanship while building a strong team community.

Boys and Girls Club Crew

Somerville High School Crew competes in Division 2 through the Massachusetts Public School Rowing Association (MPSRA) and participates in regional events through USRowing Northeast. Based out of the Blessing of the Bay Boathouse in Somerville, the team competes against local and regional programs including Cambridge Rindge & Latin, Everett, Medford, Bromfield, Acton-Boxborough, and other Greater Boston rowing programs. The spring season culminates in MPSRA championships and regional regattas, providing student-athletes with opportunities to develop teamwork, endurance, and competitive rowing skills.

Unified Track and Field

Somerville High School Unified Track and Field is an inclusive program that competes in the MIAA Unified Track Division in partnership with Special Olympics Massachusetts. With a focus on teamwork, inclusion, and sportsmanship, Unified Track provides opportunities for students of all abilities to compete together and participate in regional MIAA postseason events.
