Somerville Center for Adult Learning Experiences (SCALE)

The Somerville Center for Adult Learning Experiences (SCALE) is Somerville Public Schools’ adult education program, offering free instruction to help adult learners strengthen skills in reading, writing, and math to earn a high school credential. English language learning and workforce programs lead to industry-recognized credentials. The program also provides access to supportive resources such as a computer lab, testing center, and the Adult Diploma Program, helping learners prepare for High School Equivalency exams, college, training, or employment.

SCALE offers a supportive learning environment designed to help adults reach their educational goals and succeed in their next steps, with instruction available in the morning and evening.

All SCALE classes are free. Funding for our classes comes from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, ACLS, WIOA, CTI, Mass. Clean Energy Center, and the City of Somerville.

The second-largest GED testing site in Massachusetts (over 2200), SCALE is serving more learners today than at any point in the past decade, and its impact is growing. Last year, 152 students graduated from SCALE programs – the largest graduating class ever.

SCALE creates pathways to college, careers, and new opportunities while welcoming learners at every stage of life. The SCALE community reflects the diversity and resilience of Somerville and beyond. Students include teenagers and parents, newcomers and longtime residents, people experiencing homelessness, and learners with disabilities or visual impairments. Participants come from more than 50 countries, with especially strong communities from Haiti and Brazil.

Nearly one-third of SCALE students are high school age, many of whom are finding the connection, support, and sense of belonging they may have struggled to find in traditional school settings. At SCALE, every learner has a place to begin—and a pathway forward.

Welcome to SCALE

SCALE welcomes adults who are interested in improving their English, strengthening academic skills, earning a high school credential, preparing for college or career training, pursuing a workforce program, or developing skills for employment. Enrollment is designed to help each student identify the program and level that best meets their educational and career goals.

1

Submit an Inquiry
Individuals interested in attending SCALE should complete the program inquiry form, contact the SCALE office by telephone, or visit the SCALE office in person. Staff will provide information about available programs, eligibility requirements, and the enrollment process.

2

Join the Waitlist, When Applicable
Because some SCALE programs have high demand and limited space, prospective students may be placed on a waitlist. Individuals are contacted when an opening becomes available and are invited to continue with the registration process.

3

Complete Registration and Placement
When space is available, students complete the required registration process and, when applicable, participate in placement testing. Placement results help SCALE staff determine the appropriate instructional level and ensure that students are enrolled in a class that matches their current academic or English language skills.

4

Meet with Education and Career Advising Staff
Students have the opportunity to work with an Education and Career Advisor to identify their educational and career goals. Advisors help students understand their program options, develop an individualized education and career pathway, and identify next steps toward postsecondary education, training, and/or employment.

5

Begin Classes
Once registration and placement are complete, students receive information about their class schedule, program expectations, and start date. Students are encouraged to attend consistently and actively participate in their classes and advising services.
