Adult Basic Education (ABE)

Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes at SCALE offer a welcoming, supportive place for adults to strengthen their reading, writing, math, science, and social studies skills. Classes help learners prepare for the HiSET® or GED exam, continue their education or training, and reach their career goals.
Learning connects academic skills to real-life situations, with opportunities to build confidence, solve problems, and develop digital skills for school, work, and everyday life.

Students also receive Education and Career Advising to explore their goals, create an individualized plan, and connect with college, training, employment, and community resources. Whether you are preparing for an exam, planning your next step, or building stronger academic skills, SCALE is here to support you along the way.

Monday and Wednesday

  • Math class meets two mornings per week, and students must be able to attend class both mornings.

Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday

  • 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • Includes Social Studies and Science
  • Reading and Writing classes meet three mornings per week, and students must be able to attend class all three mornings.

System for Adult Basic Education Support (SABES)

This hotline, funded by the Massachusetts Department of Education and administered by World Education, is a statewide referral service that provides free information and referrals to adult learners and people interested in volunteering in an ABE program. The hotline database includes over 300 ABE programs statewide, offering ABE, GED, ADP/EDP, ESOL, citizenship, and family literacy services. Callers can reach an operator seven days a week, 6:00 a.m. until midnight, at 1-800-447-8844 or TTY line at 1-800-956-8401.
