Adult Basic Ed (ABE)

Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes at SCALE focus on improving students’ skills in reading, writing, social studies, science, and math so that students will be prepared to pass the HiSET exam (the high school equivalency test) and to enter college. Digital literacy is integrated into classes. Students receive educational and career advising services to assist them in planning for entry into postsecondary, training and/or workforce.

Monday and Wednesday

  • 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • Math class meets two mornings per week, and students must be able to attend class both mornings.

Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday

  • Reading and Writing
  • 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • Includes Social Studies and Science
  • Reading and Writing classes meet three mornings per week, and students must be able to attend class all three mornings.

Monday and Wednesday

  • Math, Reading and Writing
  • 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.

Thursday

  • Reading and Writing
  • 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
  • Includes Social Studies and Science

Orientation

Prior to enrollment, you must attend an orientation to become a student at SCALE. During Orientation we will provide an overview of SCALE’s program offerings, answer questions, share tools for success and give assessments in reading, writing, and math so that we can place students in the class that is right for them. After completing orientation, students will be enrolled in classes.

System for Adult Basic Education Support (SABES)

This hotline, funded by the Massachusetts Department of Education and administered by World Education, is a statewide referral service that provides free information and referrals to adult learners and people interested in volunteering in an ABE program. The hotline database includes over 300 ABE programs statewide, offering ABE, GED, ADP/EDP, ESOL, citizenship, and family literacy services. Callers can reach an operator seven days a week, 6:00 a.m. until midnight, at 1-800-447-8844 or TTY line at 1-800-956-8401.
