Middle Grades Athletics
Our schools offer students in Grades 6–8 the opportunity to represent Somerville Public Schools in competition against other Greater Boston League teams. Students may participate in one sport per season, with the first three days of each season dedicated to tryouts, and are expected to follow the SPS Student-Athlete Handbook and MIAA Handbook.
Families needing multilingual registration support can contact their school-based liaison, and athletics staff also have Portuguese-language capacity.

Fall 2026 Sports
Fall is a great time to get active, try something new, and be part of a team! Our middle grades fall sports program gives students the opportunity to build skills, make friends, and represent Somerville Public Schools. This season, students can choose from cross country, baseball, and softball.
Registration for fall sports opened on June 1, 2026 and closed September 14.

Winter 2026-27 Sports
Winter sports are just around the corner! Students interested in participating can register beginning October 1, with tryouts starting in December. It’s a great opportunity to stay active, build skills, and enjoy being part of a team. Winter offerings include boys basketball and girls basketball, with some opportunities for middle school students to try out for select Somerville High School teams.
Registration at Register My Athlete for winter sports opens October 1, 2026 and closes December 14. Tryouts begin Monday, December 7 at East Somerville Community School.
Eighth graders may try out for the Somerville High School Swim Team or Girls Basketball Team. Seventh and eighth graders may try out for the Boys Hockey Team. Contact the Athletics Director for more information.

Fall 2027 Sports
Spring brings another opportunity for students to get active, build new skills, and be part of a team! Registration for spring sports opens February 1, with students able to participate in outdoor track and field or flag football. Eighth graders may also have the opportunity to try out for select Somerville High School teams.
Registration at Register My Athlete for winter sports opens February 1, 2027 and closes April 5. Tryouts begin Monday, December 7 at East Somerville Community School.
Eighth graders may try out for the Somerville High School Girls Softball or Boys Baseball teams. Contact the Athletics Director for more information.

Register for Middle Grades Athletics
Log onto Arbiter and follow the steps below. A parent or guardian of the student-athlete must complete these forms. Returning members may log in and follow steps 2 through 3 below.
If you need assistance, call Arbiter Registration at 888-800-5583 x1. Support is available 7 days a week and messages will be returned promptly.
- Create your secure Arbiter Registration account by entering your family name, email address, and password. You will receive an email with a link to confirm your new account. (If you don’t see the email, please check your spam or junk folders.) You MUST click the link provided in your email, log in, and register per steps 2 and 3 below.
- Click the link for season sport and complete the information requested on the form. Make sure you click “save” and continue.
- Confirm your registration. Once complete, you will be asked to click “confirm registration” or add another participant. (You will receive an email confirming your registration from Arbiter Registration.)
- You can log back into Arbiter Registration at any time to update your information or check your registrations.
Athletes may not participate in any of our sports programs until they have received approval through the Athletic Department. Clearance is a two-step process designed to ensure that all athletes are healthy for participation and that both parents/guardians and athletes understand the inherent risks that accompany athletic competition. Once an athlete receives athletic clearance, it is valid for that sports person only. Athletes must repeat the process each season they plan on participating in our programs.
The following steps must be completed in order, or your athletic clearance will be delayed:
- Register on Arbiter Registration
- Attend a mandatory medical clearance event
Each student is required to have a current physical exam on file with the Athletics Department, per MIAA and DPH requirements.
Show up to your mandatory medical clearance with your:
Online registration completed
Physical (no more than 13 months old), per MIAA and DPH regulations

Important Medical Notation: If your student athlete requires the use of an EPI Pen or inhaler, please contact your child’s school nurse and submit the correct forms for the nurse.
